Polycystic Ovarian Disease(PCOD)

Problem Statement

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS/PCOD) is a hormonal disorder that affects women in their reproductive age. PCOS is a common health condition that affects teen and young women, it is seen in 1 out of o10 women in their childbearing age. The reproductive system of women is controlled by the complex interplay of primarily five reproductive hormones namely Oestrogen, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, progesterone and luteinizing hormone.

An imbalance within these hormones leads to a hormonal disorder called PCOS.

Causes:

Given the Modern Lifestyle and Dietary patterns, PCOD and PCOS is becoming quite a rampant problem in female subjects. The ever-expanding cities, the increasing pollution, the availability of fast foods and online easy accessibility of fast foods is making the people dependent and allowing them to experiment newer things. Obesity, insulin resistance, are the two major demons haunting the urban population a lot. And the number is increasing day by day without much solace from the modern-day medical advances.

Also, the modern amenities available around us like AC atmosphere, centrally air-conditioned offices, personal vehicles for movement, more availability of cash to common man, lifts in high rise apartments, is making our lives too easy to leave a little scope for the physical movements of the body thus making us lazier than ever. Then there are other factors which play a major role in worsening the above-mentioned condition like lack of awareness among females regarding the right nutrition. Simultaneous pressure of Job and home is making the life worse. Modern gazettes like Smart mobile, smart TVs, Laptops etc is making them addictive and consumes a lot of time and giving unduly high dosage of radiation exposure.

Reason for Chronicity:

Then there is little effort from the modern-day doctors to change the lifestyle of the subjects, instead the subjects are given the hormonal replacements for the deficiency or excess of any oestrogen or testosterone levels in the blood.

The patient is made to understand that the problem lies with the hormones and the supplements given the qualified doctors will solve their problem. And the patient starts popping up those pills, without realising that it is just the substitute for the natural hormones and body’s secretions, which are disturbed due to unhealthy food habits and lack of exercise.

Takeaway:

It is a proven fact beyond doubt that PCOD & PCOS are the diseases of lifestyle. Many studies have proven and established that the right nutrition and physical activity goes a long way in keeping and maintaining a better female Health & fertility. Maintaining a regular menstrual cycle by managing PCOS with Diet and Exercise could help get rid of Fatigue. It is a really important thing that the female takes daily dose of essential fatty acids, B vitamins and zinc, and reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption.

Reducing the stress levels, getting a sufficient rest and maintaining a healthy body weight is what one should try to achieve and maintain. Smoking and alcohol also interfere with the hormonal balance. It is a well- known fact that smoking can inhibit ovulation. One should stop or at least cut down the smoking.
