Energy and Fitness

Our muscles require energy for contractions. It uses ATP for meeting its requirements. When ATP are consumed it will make more ATP from either Carbohydrate, Protein or Fat.

1 carb Mol. gives 4kcal 1 Protein molecule gives 4.1 kcal and a fat molecule gives 9 kcal. So, what is the better option to use?? Obviously fat but it's not in our hands till we follow a pattern of eating and exercising that would allow the body to use fat molecules only.

And consumption of more fats for energy means what???

Less storage of fat and you end up in losing fat body mass and not muscles. Most of us when start losing weight either by dieting or by other methods like exercising etc we tend to lose more weight initially. But after losing 3 to 5 kgs no matter how much we try, most of us would stop losing any further weight. Also, there is common complaint of lethargy, fatigue, and listlessness.

We have to understand that initial 3 to 5 kgs of weight loss is of water portion only and not the fat as is generally presumed. Actual weigh loss starts from that point. That’s why we tend to regain 3 to 5 kgs as soon as stop dieting or exercising.

One more factor that works here is that, we have to lose the fat mass from the body and not the muscle mass. It’s the Fat mass which is main culprit in causing various diseases of adult onset. Muscle mass is something that we have to preserve at all costs.

Wrong way of dieting, wrong food choices, excessive workouts for long hours may help in losing weight, but our muscle mass is going down. That’s why we feel cramps, fatigue, muscle pain, sleep disturbances, loss of concentration, irritability and remain lethargic.

Friends please understand, our bodies and genetics are not designed to lose more than 1 to 2 pounds (approx. half to 1 kg of Fat) per week. Any more loss is going to cause the damages, which may sometimes be dangerous enough to cause permanent debility.

Remember it is not the calorie imbalance which is causing the weight gain but the hormonal imbalances which is main culprit behind weight gain and energy imbalance in our body.

Our circadian rhythm is the energy wheel, that increases or decreases various hormones in different organ systems at various times of the day. These hormonal levels help in performing various physiological functions in the body. Understanding the circadian rhythm is going to help us in choosing a better timing for various activities and food choices.

So, a nutritionist will guide and glide, you through what is right combination for you. He will not keep you hungry or make you eat just roughage (ghaas phoos) as is general assumption. Having an expert opinion about your body will keep you in good shape for the rest of your life and will keep your energies high.
